Betting Procedure in a Poker Game

All poker games are different, but they do share certain features, such as betting rules and betting procedures. The dealing out of cards and the game sequence may vary according to the poker variant, but in any poker game, players generally make their betting actions in a clockwise rotation. This means that the player who acts next is the one seated to the left of the current player.

Conventionally, even in more casual game setting, at the start of their turn, a player usually announces the move that they plan to make before taking action. Any verbal declaration or non-verbal action a player makes on their turn is usually considered binding. This means that they have to follow through on the actions that they have to take. This rule usually ensures that a player cannot change their action after they have seen how their fellow players react.

To start off a hand, there is usually a forced bet, which opens the pot. There are a lot of different kinds of forced bets, and most of them are usually made before the cards themselves have been dealt. Forced bets like the bring-in though, are normally made after the deal has been made. It is not unusual to have more than one forced bet in place during a particular hand. Antes are a particular favorite in this case, since, in an ante, all of the players are required to put equal amounts of money into the pot. This tends to equalize the pot, since all of the players are required to put the same amount into the pot.

Usually, after the forced bets are made, regular betting actions take place. Before the first bet is made, a player on whose turn it is can opt to "check" or defer their bets to the next player or players. The first betting act where money is placed into the pot after that initial forced bet is called an "open." After opening, the turns proceed normally, and the players can fold, call, or raise as normal. Usually, when a player folds, they surrender their cards without necessarily showing those cards. In order to indicate that a player has chosen to check, they can tap the table or make a motion like it. Any other kind of bet that requires money can be indicated non-verbally by placing the chips or the amount in front of the player. It is usually considered rude to toss chips or money directly into the pot -this is called "splashing the pot"- since this can cause confusion over how much a player has bet, since splashing the pot keeps other players from verifying how much the betting player has wagered for that particular turn.
