Poker and the Betting Structure
Betting can be considered the most important part of any poker game. Whatever you say at the table, no matter how many supposedly fake tells you show that you think no one can see through, it's your chips that speak the loudest. They are the prime method of communicating with your opponents and without it, poker would just be about who had the best hand dealt to them. Traditionally, there are only four betting structures, or methods of betting that can be used in any variant of poker. You may ask whether or not knowing these betting structures is important or not. Simply speaking, definitely yes, as not knowing these rules can lead to getting kicked out of the game and is often tantamount to doing something without full understand and knowledge. This is a condition that many players try to avoid, if they are the least bit intelligent.
Texas Hold'em games in particular are quickly latching on to the idea of spread limit games, one of the more common betting structures around. The term itself refers to the range of potential and legal bets in every round, which sets the bars. Essentially, this tells players how quickly out of hand a game can get, as this can be used to make sure that a game lasts a certain amount of time and can give people a gauge of the amount of pressure a hand could go under. Generally, this betting structure also includes another rule, that you may only raise an amount equal to the minimum range or greater and equal or greater than the other person's bet. This ensures speed and higher stakes, should the table be in the mood for it.
Casinos are usually home to the fixed limit game and may be the most betting structure that experienced gamblers would be most used to. This is relatively simple as it just tells you how many chips you can throw in, assuring a relaxed and simple state of play. In later rounds, the bets are sometimes doubled to keep the fires burning and to maximize the profit for the card sharks. Pot Limit games are for the No Limit fans who don't quite want to commit to the level of a No Limit game. In these games, the size of the pot determines the largest bet possible. The tricky part is realizing that the bets can get very big very fast before anyone realizes.
No limit games are at the top of the mountain and are usually the biggest psychological hurdles that players need to get over in Texas Hold'em and other poker variants. This means you can go all-in anytime and is widely considered to be the most thrilling betting structure there is.
